Predecessor rain event

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010682

A band of precipitation that forms ahead of a larger, more organized synoptic-scale weather system, such as a tropical cyclone or extratropical cyclone. These events are often associated with an upper-level trough or jet streak that provides the necessary lift and moisture convergence. Predecessor rain events can produce substantial rainfall totals far from the main storm center.
