Predictability

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008121

The extent to which the future state of an atmospheric or oceanic system can be accurately forecast. This depends on the initial conditions, the accuracy of the governing equations, and the inherent chaotic nature of the system. Numerical weather prediction models provide a measure of this through ensemble forecasts, where the spread of solutions indicates the level of uncertainty.
