Uncertainty
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009872
A quantification of the doubt about the value of a measurement or a forecast, representing the range of values within which the true value is expected to lie. In weather forecasting, uncertainty arises from errors in initial observations, incomplete understanding of atmospheric processes, and the chaotic nature of the atmosphere itself. Ensemble forecasting is a primary method for estimating this uncertainty by running a model multiple times with slightly different initial conditions.
