Breeding method
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004027
A technique for generating the initial perturbations used in ensemble weather forecasting to represent atmospheric uncertainty. The method involves introducing a small, random perturbation to an atmospheric model's initial state, running the model for a short period, and then calculating the difference between the perturbed and unperturbed forecasts. This difference, which represents a fast-growing error mode, is then rescaled and used as a new perturbation for the next cycle, effectively 'breeding' dynamically unstable structures.
