Genoa cyclone
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005902
A low-pressure system that forms or intensifies in the lee of the Alps over the Gulf of Genoa and the northern Mediterranean Sea. This process, known as lee cyclogenesis, occurs when a northwesterly flow of cold air is blocked and deflected by the Alpine mountain range, inducing a cyclonic vortex on the leeward side. Genoa cyclones are a primary cause of heavy precipitation and flooding events in the northern Italian plains and central Europe, particularly during autumn and spring.
