Spectrum

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009120

The distribution of a physical quantity's magnitude or energy across a range of frequencies, wavelengths, wavenumbers, or other related variables. In atmospheric science, this concept applies to electromagnetic radiation, atmospheric waves, turbulence, and the size distribution of aerosols or hydrometeors. For example, a power spectrum of wind velocity reveals how the energy of turbulent eddies is distributed among different frequencies or scales of motion.
