Beta particle

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003897

A high-energy electron or positron emitted from an atomic nucleus during radioactive decay, specifically beta decay. In atmospheric science, beta particles are a component of natural background radiation and can be produced by the decay of radioactive isotopes present in the atmosphere, such as those from cosmic ray interactions or terrestrial sources. They contribute to atmospheric ionization.
