Radioactive carbon

An unstable isotope of carbon, primarily carbon-14, which undergoes radioactive decay. This isotope is naturally produced in the upper atmosphere by cosmic ray interactions with nitrogen. It is used in atmospheric science to trace the movement of carbon through the Earth system and in dating organic materials.
