Radio wind observation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008333

A method for determining wind speed and direction at different altitudes by tracking the movement of a radiosonde or other balloon-borne instrument using radio signals. Ground-based receiving equipment measures the azimuth and elevation angles, or the range and angles, of the ascending balloon over time. This data is then used to calculate the horizontal displacement and, subsequently, the wind vector at each height, providing a vertical profile of atmospheric winds.
