Rawinsonde observation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002267

  1. A meteorological measurement obtained by launching a radiosonde (a balloon-borne instrument package) that transmits atmospheric data back to a ground station, while simultaneously tracking the balloon's position to determine wind speed and direction. The radiosonde measures pressure, temperature, and humidity at different altitudes. These observations are typically taken twice daily at synoptic times (00Z and 12Z) worldwide.

  2. A radiosonde observation which includes wind data.
