Radar wind sounding
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008281
A method for determining upper-air wind speed and direction by tracking a radar target carried aloft by a free-rising balloon. The target, often a corner reflector attached to a radiosonde, is tracked by a ground-based radar system. The radar measures the target's azimuth, elevation, and range at regular intervals to calculate its horizontal movement, which corresponds to the wind profile.
