Vorticity equation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010070
A prognostic equation that describes the rate of change of the vorticity of a fluid parcel over time. Derived by taking the curl of the momentum equations, it quantifies how vorticity is generated and modified by processes such as advection, stretching of vortex tubes, tilting, and solenoidal effects. A simplified form, the barotropic vorticity equation, neglects the tilting and solenoidal terms and was foundational to early numerical weather prediction models.
