Vorticity advection
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010069
The transport of vorticity by the horizontal wind field. This process is a primary mechanism for forcing vertical motion in the atmosphere, with positive vorticity advection (PVA) leading to upward motion and negative vorticity advection (NVA) causing subsidence. In the Northern Hemisphere, PVA is maximized downstream of a trough axis in the jet stream, contributing to surface cyclogenesis and precipitation.
