Inclination of the wind

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006476

The angle at which the wind blows across isobars, deviating from a path parallel to them. In the free atmosphere, wind tends to flow nearly parallel to isobars due to the geostrophic balance. Near the surface, friction causes the wind to cross isobars at an angle, flowing from higher to lower pressure, typically between 10 and 30 degrees over land.
