Cross-isobar angle
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004773
The angle at which the wind flows across lines of constant atmospheric pressure (isobars) in the lower atmosphere. Due to friction with the Earth's surface, the wind does not flow parallel to isobars but instead has a component directed towards lower pressure. This angle is typically larger over rough terrain and smaller over smooth surfaces like oceans, ranging from 10 to 45 degrees.
