Cross-polarized signal

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004774

A radar signal whose polarization is orthogonal to the transmitted polarization, arising from scattering by non-spherical hydrometeors like ice crystals or melting snowflakes. Dual-polarization radars measure this signal to infer information about the shape, orientation, and phase of precipitation particles. The differential reflectivity (ZDR) and linear depolarization ratio (LDR) are derived from these measurements.
