Linear depolarization ratio

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006980

A measure used in lidar remote sensing to characterize the shape of atmospheric particles by comparing the intensity of the cross-polarized backscattered light to the co-polarized backscattered light. It indicates the degree to which incident linearly polarized light is depolarized upon scattering. Spherical particles, like water droplets, exhibit a low linear depolarization ratio, while non-spherical particles, such as ice crystals, show higher values.
