Linear differential equation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006981

An equation involving an unknown function and its derivatives, where the function and its derivatives appear only to the first power and are not multiplied together. Many complex atmospheric processes are approximated using these equations because they are easier to solve analytically than their nonlinear counterparts. For example, the thermal wind equation is a linear relationship derived from the more complex primitive equations of motion.
