Linear instability

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006982

A condition in a fluid system where small perturbations grow exponentially over time, as described by a linearized set of governing equations. This growth occurs when the system's restoring forces are insufficient to overcome the destabilizing forces acting on the disturbance. Examples include baroclinic instability in the atmosphere and Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in shear flows.
