Colloidal instability
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004518
The tendency of a colloidal system, such as a cloud, to lose its stability, leading to the growth and eventual precipitation of its constituent particles. This instability arises when forces promoting particle aggregation, like collision and coalescence, overcome the forces that keep particles suspended. In clouds, it describes the transition from stable cloud droplets to precipitation-sized particles.
