Aureole
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003703
A small, colored ring or series of rings observed around the sun or moon, typically appearing white or bluish immediately around the luminary, surrounded by reddish-brown. It is caused by the diffraction of light by uniform-sized water droplets in thin clouds, such as altocumulus or altostratus. The angular size of the aureole is inversely proportional to the size of the cloud droplets.
