Mock moon

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007350

A bright spot of light appearing on either side of the moon, similar to a sun dog but associated with moonlight. These optical phenomena, also known as paraselenae, are caused by the refraction of moonlight through hexagonal ice crystals in cirrus clouds. They are typically seen when the moon is bright and low in the sky.
