Winds aloft

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010282

Atmospheric air currents occurring at elevations above the Earth's surface, distinct from surface winds which are influenced by terrain and friction. These winds are measured and forecast to aid in aviation planning, weather prediction, and understanding atmospheric circulation patterns. Data for winds aloft are obtained from radiosondes, radar, and aircraft observations, often presented as wind speed and direction at specific pressure levels.
