Zero curtain

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010320

A phenomenon in frozen ground where the temperature within a layer of soil remains at or near 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) for an extended period during freezing or thawing. This occurs due to the latent heat exchange associated with the phase change of water. It delays the complete freezing or thawing of the ground.
