Active basin area

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003273

The part of a drainage basin that actually contributes runoff to the main stream, as distinct from the total topographic basin, which can include arid or closed areas that never deliver water to the outlet. Its size depends on climate, soil, and geology, and during individual storms it expands and shrinks with rainfall intensity and antecedent soil moisture. The active basin of Lake Chad, for example, is less than half of its conventional basin.
