Stratus
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002667
A low-level cloud type characterized by a uniform, gray, sheet-like appearance that covers a wide area. These clouds form when moist air cools below its dew point over a broad region, without strong vertical motion. Stratus clouds can produce light drizzle or mist, and their base is typically below 2,000 meters (6,500 feet).
A low, generally gray cloud layer with a fairly uniform base. Stratus may appear in the form of ragged patches, but otherwise does not exhibit individual cloud elements as do cumulus and stratocumulus clouds. Fog usually is a surface-based form of stratus.
