Fractus

  1. A cloud species of stratus and cumulus clouds, written stratus fractus and cumulus fractus, consisting of small ragged fragments with a torn, shredded look that change shape quickly. The fragments often form below a rain-bearing cloud in humid, turbulent air, and the older names fractostratus and fractocumulus describe the same clouds.

  2. Ragged, detached cloud fragments; same as scud.
