Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009293
A type of cloud characterized by its extensive horizontal development and relatively uniform base, appearing as a broad sheet or layer across the sky. These clouds form in stable atmospheric conditions where air is gently lifted over a wide area, leading to widespread condensation. Examples include stratus, altostratus, and nimbostratus, which often produce steady precipitation.
