Warm front

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003020

  1. A boundary where a mass of warmer air advances and displaces a colder air mass. The warm air gently glides up and over the denser cold air, leading to a broad area of stratiform clouds and steady precipitation ahead of the surface front. The passage of a warm front is marked by a shift in wind direction, a rise in temperature, and an increase in humidity.

  2. A transition zone between a mass of warm air and the colder air it is replacing.
