Heterogeneous fluid
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006232
A fluid whose density varies in space, as in a stratified atmosphere or ocean, in contrast to a homogeneous fluid of uniform density. The density variations let buoyancy act on displaced parcels, which allows internal gravity waves that a uniform-density fluid cannot support. Distinct phases or components are not required for a fluid to be heterogeneous in this sense.
