Oxidant

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-020031

1. A substance containing oxygen that reacts chemically with other materials to produce new substances. Oxidants are the primary ingredients in smog.

2. A collective term for some of the primary constituents of photochemical smog.

3. Electron-accepting molecules in chemical reactions in which electrons are transferred from one molecule to another (oxidation-reduction).

4. Any substance, such as oxygen (O2) or chlorine (Cl2), that will readily add (take on) electrons. The opposite is a reducing agent.

5. A substance that oxidizes another substance. Oxdizing agents can cause other materials to combust more readily (or upon contact) or make fires burn more strongly.
