Upper-air station

A facility equipped to make and transmit upper-air observations of atmospheric conditions. These stations launch instrument packages, known as radiosondes, attached to weather balloons to measure temperature, pressure, humidity, and winds at different altitudes. Globally, these launches are coordinated to occur simultaneously, typically at 0000 and 1200 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
