Double-theodolite observation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005111
A method for tracking the trajectory of a rising balloon or other atmospheric probe by simultaneously observing it from two separate ground stations. Each station uses a theodolite to measure the azimuth and elevation angles to the target. The intersection of the two lines of sight from the known baseline between the stations provides a precise three-dimensional position of the object, with accuracy dependent on the baseline length and observation synchronization.
