A line of known length between two observing points, used as the base for triangulation in meteorological work such as cloud-height measurement, where two stations, or a light projector and a detector, sight the same target. The height or position of the target follows from the baseline length and the angles measured at each end. With one side and two angles known, the sine rule fixes the other two sides of the triangle.
