Rocketsonde

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002351

  1. An instrument package launched by a small rocket to measure atmospheric conditions at very high altitudes, typically above the range of weather balloons. It carries sensors for temperature, pressure, and wind speed, transmitting data back to a ground station during its descent. These devices can reach altitudes exceeding 60 kilometers.

  2. A type of radiosonde that is shot into the atmosphere by a rocket, allowing it to collect data during its parachute descent from a higher position in the atmosphere than a balloon could reach.
