Rocket-triggered lightning
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008598
Lightning artificially initiated by launching a small rocket with a trailing wire into a thundercloud. This technique is used in lightning research to study the physical processes of lightning discharges under controlled conditions. The wire provides a conductive path for a leader to propagate from the cloud to the ground.
