Snow stake

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002540

  1. A graduated pole or rod installed vertically in the ground to measure the depth of accumulated snow. Observers regularly read the height of the snowpack against the markings on the stake, providing data on snowfall amounts and snow depth changes over time. These measurements are used in hydrological models and for avalanche forecasting.

  2. A 1-3/4 inch square, semi-permanent stake, marked in inch increments to measure snow depth.
