Canadian hardness-gauge
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004123
An instrument for measuring the hardness or resistance of layers within a snowpack. It consists of a graduated rod with a spring-loaded disc at one end that is pushed horizontally into the face of a snow pit. The force required to make the disc penetrate the snow is read from the gauge, providing a quantitative measure used in snow hydrology and avalanche forecasting.
