Radioactive snow gauge

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008340

An instrument that measures the water equivalent of snowpack by detecting the attenuation of gamma radiation emitted from a radioactive source placed beneath the snow. The amount of radiation absorbed is inversely proportional to the snow depth and density. This method provides continuous, automated measurements of snow water equivalent.
