Gamma-ray snow gauge
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005870
An instrument used to measure the water equivalent of snowpack by detecting the attenuation of natural gamma radiation emitted from the ground. As snow accumulates, it absorbs more gamma rays, leading to a decrease in detected radiation, which is then correlated with snow depth and density. These gauges provide continuous, automated measurements in remote locations.
