Disk hardness gauge
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010479
An instrument used in snow science to measure the hardness or resistance of different layers within a snowpack. It consists of a disk of a standardized area (such as 100 or 200 square centimeters) attached to a force gauge, which is pressed perpendicularly into the wall of a snow pit. The force required to cause the snow layer to fail or collapse is recorded as a measure of its hardness, providing data for avalanche forecasting and snow hydrology studies.
