Point gauge

A specialized instrument used to measure the depth of precipitation, particularly rainfall, at a single location with high precision. It consists of a sharp-pointed rod that is lowered until it just touches the water surface in a collection vessel. The depth is then read from a scale, often to within a tenth of a millimeter.
