Gauge zero

The arbitrary reference elevation or datum from which gauge height measurements are taken at a stream gauging station. This zero point does not necessarily correspond to the bottom of the stream or to sea level, but rather serves as a consistent baseline for local water level readings. All reported gauge heights are relative to this established gauge zero.
