Gauge relation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005883

A mathematical relationship used in radar meteorology to estimate rainfall rate (R) from the measured radar reflectivity factor (Z). This empirical formula takes the form Z = aR^b, where 'a' and 'b' are coefficients that depend on the type of precipitation and the characteristics of the raindrop size distribution. The Marshall-Palmer relation, with a=200 and b=1.6, is a widely cited example for stratiform rain.
