Accumulation rain gauge

An instrument that collects precipitation over a period and holds it for later measurement. It consists of a container with a funnel-shaped opening to direct rain, snow, or hail into a collection chamber, minimizing evaporation. The total accumulated precipitation is measured manually by pouring the contents into a graduated cylinder or by weighing the container.
