Grenade sounding
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006069
A method of atmospheric sounding that involves launching small explosive devices, or grenades, into the upper atmosphere to measure temperature and wind profiles. The time of arrival of the sound waves from each explosion at ground-based microphones is used to calculate these atmospheric properties. This technique is primarily used for research purposes at very high altitudes.
