Velocity-area method
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010835
A technique for measuring the total discharge or flow rate of a river or open channel. The method involves dividing the channel's cross-section into a series of smaller vertical segments, measuring the average flow velocity and area of each segment, and then summing the individual discharges (velocity multiplied by area) to obtain the total flow. Velocity measurements for each segment are typically made with a current meter at one or more depths.
