Approach velocity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003591

The mean velocity of a fluid flowing in the approach channel leading to a hydraulic structure, obstruction, or measurement section. It is calculated by dividing the total flow rate by the cross-sectional area of the flow in that channel. This velocity contributes to the total energy head of the flow and must be accounted for in hydraulic calculations, such as determining the discharge over a weir or through a flume.
