Midsection method

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007296

A technique for calculating the total discharge of a stream or river by dividing its cross-section into a series of vertical rectangular panels. The water velocity is measured at the center of each panel, and this velocity is assumed to represent the average for that entire panel. The discharge for each panel is calculated by multiplying its cross-sectional area by its measured velocity, and the total stream discharge is the sum of the discharges from all individual panels.
