Apparent groundwater velocity
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003584
The specific discharge of groundwater, calculated as the volumetric flow rate divided by the total cross-sectional area of the porous medium, including both pores and solid matrix. This fictitious velocity, also known as the Darcy velocity, assumes flow occurs through the entire formation area. The actual average velocity of water moving through the pores, called the seepage velocity, is higher than the apparent velocity because the flow is restricted to the void spaces.
